Social Emotional Learning (SEL)

SEL is the process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions. What is SEL?

SEL stands for social emotional learning. SEL is the process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions. Why is Lakota focusing on SEL?

Social emotional learning has been a part of the health curriculum for many years. In 2019, the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce (DEW) released its strategic plan. DEW identified Social Emotional Learning as one of “Four Equal Learning Domains'' along with Foundational Knowledge & Skills, Well-Rounded Content, and Leadership & Reasoning (see page 12). As part of the strategic plan, DEW also adopted Social Emotional Learning standards for K-12 schools. Ohio’s SEL standards lean heavily on the framework developed by the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL).

Decades of research studies demonstrate that SEL improves students’ social emotional skills, attitudes, relationships, academic performance, and perceptions of classroom and school climate. Studies also show that SEL causes a decline in students’ anxiety, behavior problems, and substance abuse.

How is Lakota Implementing SEL?

(Grades K-12) Mental Health Services

Lakota works with many local partners to provide more learning opportunities for students including Children’s Hospital’s Adapt for Life program and NAMI’s Ending the Silence program both focused on mental health and wellness.

Lakota continues to work with MindPeace to provide mental health therapists in each school. These school-based therapists see students within the school day to limit barriers to care for those in need.

(Grades K-6) SEL Special

Most recently, Lakota has increased SEL instruction in the health curriculum in grades K-6 and re-branded the health special as the SEL special. This course will utilize some of the programs listed above but will be rooted and aligned with the SEL standards and health standards (specifically the substance abuse and nutrition and fitness standards as well as the SEL standards that have always existed in the health curriculum).

(Grades 7-8) Sources of Strength

Lakota is implementing Sources of Strength in grades 3-6 and the peer led portion of the system in grades 7-8. Sources of Strength is a universal suicide prevention program that builds protective influences around youth and reduces the likelihood that vulnerable youth/young adults will become suicidal. Similarly, Lakota’s high schools are implementing Hope Squad which is also a peer to peer suicide prevention program.
